Fort Umpqua Days
Fort Umpqua Days is a two-day celebration held on Labor Day weekend. Many returning attendees applaud the event as an example of small-town friendliness and community effort. In 2010, the celebration will feature Fort Umpqua, with the continued progress on the buildings within the stockade.
A two-day bass tournament adds to the excitement of Fort Umpqua Days. Several sponsors help fund the tournament prizes which are awarded for the biggest fish caught by one of the three-person team in a boat. Elkton, situated on the main Umpqua River, is becoming known as the “bass capital.” Local guides and vendors work long and hard to make the event a success.
The “Echoes of the Umpqua” pageant is a highlight of Fort Umpqua Days. The popular drama features approximately 100 community members who write, compose music, perform, and direct this popular production.This year's theme is "Elkton - A Gathering Place."
A Saturday night dance and barbecue attracts a crowd that stays until the last encore is over. A roving singing cowboy and local musical talent keep the ambiance rhythmic. The famous pie auction brings in a good sum for community projects. In 2008, the men of the community decided to try their hand at pie baking to add to the fun and flavor of the event. Food booths sponsored by local organizations help promote the efforts of various community organizations and causes. Vendors and local crafters offer wares for sale.
